A new search engine started this week, named Cuil (pronounced cool), at http://www.cuil.com/. This startup was created by three former Google employees who claim that it goes "beyond todays search engine techniques" (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/29/cuil_launch/).
An initial query for "Colorado Technical University" produced an interesting difference. The results page shows not only the results, but logo's, pictures, and other information to help quickly identify the entry you seek. Also, instead of the lines of text running across the page, like most search engines, this results page is built in columns, something a little easier (in my opinion) to read.
The queries themselves leave a little to be desired. Some searches for other things (my name, my website, etc) produced no results, or erroneous results. As this is a brand new search engine, they should produce better results, as their systems have more time to crawl through and archive more websites.
Overall, a nice web tool with some minor initial flaws. We’ll have to keep an eye on it and see how it develops.
